The new live science format ”Explanatory Factor” designed for social and human sciences has been developed in collaboration between science and art professionals. Factor in Finnish can also mean ”author” and the idea is that researchers explain what their research results actually tell us. In addition to research results interesting for the audience can be researchers’ research journey towards new knowledge and new insights. As well as the phenomena, people and realities encountered along the way, typical for social and human sciences.
Live science format goes beyond the traditional methods of science communication. New format takes influences from performance art and documentary theater without actually being either. Researchers and professional actors operate on stage before live audience together. The performance relies on researched knowledge, but facts are also presented through fiction. Knowledge comes to life and can touch the viewer. Humor often also enters the picture.
Public debate easily turns into a battle over knowledge. In the prevailing atmosphere, the research results of social science and humanities are increasingly openly targeted with expectations of utility, disparagement or even hostility.
Live encounters create a new kind of audience relationship with viewers whose lives are affected by the kowlwdge. Face-to-face interaction allows a more equal participation and interaction.
